Ik was elf toen de oorlog uitbrak. Op een vroege ochtend vlogen de vliegtuigen van de vijand zo laag over de huizen dat je de gezichten van de piloten kon zien. Ik vond het spannend, maar algauw werd het angstig. In onze klas zaten Joodse kinderen en kinderen van verraders. Zelfs de meester durfde niet meer te zeggen wat hij dacht.
